SYDNEY PLAYS WILLIAM TELL
To understand this painting you need to be familiar with Rossini’s William Tell Overture. The music starts with “rain drops” (short high notes on the flute) and crescendoes into a full blown “storm” with rolling thunder (drums) and claps of lighting (cymbals). Sydney refers to the Opera House in Sydney, Australia. If the painting looks like a ship on a stormy sea, that’s what I had in mind. To me the Opera House looks like an island ship.
